CARRIAGEOFANIMALS (CAR 256A)

Theoperator of an aircraftmust not permit a live animal to be in the aircraft

unless:

• the animal is in a container and is carried in accordancewith this

regulation; or

• the animal is carriedwith thewritten permission of CASA and in

accordancewith any conditions specified in the permission.

The above paragraph does not apply to a dog accompanying a visually

impairedor hearing impaired person as a guide or an assistant if the dog is:

• carried in the passenger cabin of the aircraft; and

• placed on amoisture-absorbentmat as near to theperson as practicable;

and

• restrained in away thatwill prevent thedog frommoving from themat.

More than one animal must not be kept in the same container if doing so

would be likely to affect adversely the safety of the aircraft.

A containermust be so constructed that:

• an animal kept in the container cannot escape from the container; and

• anywater or excreta in the container is not likely toescape from the

container in normal flying conditions; and

• the containerwill withstand being damaged in away thatmay allow an

animal, orwater or excreta, in the container to escape.

A container inwhich an animal is keptmust not be in thepassenger cabin of

an aircraft.

If:

• an animal is carried in an aircraft in a container; and

• if the animal is not restrained it couldmove around inside the container in

away thatmay alter thedistribution of the load of the aircraft; and

• the safety of the aircraftmay be affected adversely by thatmovement; the

animal must be restrained in the container to prevent thatmovement.

Themeans of restraintmust be strongenough towithstandbeing damaged

in away thatmay allow the animal to escape.
