Dan created the topic: Who can carry out maintenance

Hi Bob,

Who can carry out maintenance on a plane?. Can an RPL holder sign the release and carry out maintenance or only a PPL holder can actually carry out maintenance?

I have found conflicting information on Casa's website.

Cheers Dan.

A lot of Regs to wade through to answer that question. However a good spot to start off would be with the following CASA document -

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply!, That is the document i read...

See paragraph 1, section 6 ... page 39

"A pilot who is endorsed on an aircraft type (is legally permitted to fly that type and holds a PPL or higher license) is permitted to perform all the maintenance listed in schedule 8 of the regulations (CAR 1988) for class 'B' aircraft only."

Then see 'Conclusion' Page 43

"A pilot who is permitted to fly an aircraft as a pilot in command and holds an RPL (or higher) is allowed to carry out maintenance on an aircraft. The maintenance is restricted to that listed in CAR 1988 schedule 8"

This is where my confusion lays, the CAR only mentions a "A pilots license".

Cheers Dan.

The Act, then Regs will take precedence. Your quickest avenue to a solution is to give CASA a ring tomorrow on 131757 and ask for a Senior AWI in maintenance licencing. Put the question to him/her and it shouldn't take too long to resolve the discrepancy.
