Alternate Minima Question

Flysafe created the topic: Alternate Minima Question

I have come across a question online with the following forecast

FM261000 15006KT 7000 LIGHT RAIN BKN006 BKN025 OVC040
TEMPO 2522/2618 3000 RAIN OVC007
INTER 2522/2618 1000 HEAVY RAIN OVC006
PROB30 TEMPO 2602/2618 VRB15G30KT 2000 THUNDERSTORMS WITH RAIN OVC008
SCT030CB

If flying in within the validity period would you require an alternate given that from 1000 the cloud base is more than sct below the alternate minima or would you only require 60 mins holding?

Look at the dates. If flying VFR with an ETA after 2130 on the 25th UTC you will require 60 minutes holding for the TEMPO (ignore the INTER as it is less restrictive). If arriving VFR with an ETA after 0930 on the 26th UTC you will require an alternate due to BKN cloud below 1500 AGL and also visibility below 8km.

Always plan for the most restrictive forecast at your ETA (with the +/- 30 min buffer in mind).

The INTER in this forecast is for IFR purposes.

I'd need to know what the ALTN minima is to give you a 100% answer mate. However it is safe to assume that the BKN 006 would be below the ALTN minimum if that's a TAF you need an alternate after 0930, after 1000 for a TTF - holding fuel won't cut it as the cloud is attached to a FM period.

Holding an alternate will also negate the need to take holding fuel for th INTER and TEMPO.

Ray,

VFR minimums don't pertain to an IFR aircraft conducting an instrument approach. The ALTN criteria for an IFR aircraft is no more than SCT below the ALTN minima and visibility greater than that published on the procedure.
