Hi,
Just doing some old prac exam questions and found this one.

An Echo aeroplane is loaded with the main tanks full and the auxiliary tanks empty.
Gross weight 2550 kg
Total moment index 682 index units
The maximum amount of fuel that may now be loaded into the auxiliary tanks is closest to -

The CoG would be 5 mm inside the AFT limit and adding fuel to the AUX would move it back. Then when you take off you would move the CoG outside the AFT limit.
Or should I work back to a ZFW which is then only 2 mm inside the AFT limit ?

G'day Danny,

Thought I'd try and answer this for you mate.

As you said, the gross weight is 2550kg and the moment is 682. The CoG is 2674mm aft of the datum; just inside the envelope! Plot this value on the Echo envelope as point 'A'. Add 100kg of fuel to the auxiliary tanks . The new weight will be 2650kg and the moment 710; 28 more index units (arm is 2800mm for the aux. tanks). Plot this point as point 'B' and join the two together. Where this line cuts the envelope represents how much extra fuel can be loaded.

By the looks, 100kg is the answer. Hope that sounds about right.

This question is purely academic. For the Echo to be loaded in this manner it would be impossible to fly it in any case. You wouldn't be loading any fuel into the auxiliary tanks unless the main tanks were full. If you were only 6mm from the aft limit with the main tanks full you must have been way outside the aft limit at ZFW. So in practice, the aircraft could not be flown. The question is purely academic and was not intended to be taken seriously.
